Victoria Nuland, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, is retiring in the coming weeks.

The timing of her retirement is interesting. Nuland was in Kiev where she announced January 31st that Mr. Putin could expect some “nice surprises on the battlefield” in the coming year. In the last week, a recording of two German generals was released. The generals were talking about blowing up the Kursk bridge in Crimea.

Now Nuland is retiring.

The speculation is that destroying the Kursk bridge was one of the surprises that Nuland was planning for this year, but it leaked. And now she’s been sacked.

Nuland’s much vaunted 2023 Ukraine offensive failed spectacularly. The administrative state understands this and wanted to push Nuland out of power. With the leak of the German generals, this was the final event that sealed Nuland’s fate.

Now the neocons will focus on exiting Ukraine where they can turn their focus on China and Taiwan.
The press release does not say that Nuland is resigning. Instead, it says that she’s retiring. Retiring does not leave Nuland the option of returning to the State Department. Of course she’ll pop up in a think tank somewhere and defend the war in Ukraine, but she won’t have the power to exact her schemes.
